Analogue modelling

Scaled physical models of tectonic structures to test hypotheses and validate interpretations.

Analogue modelling

Scaled physical models let us reproduce and test how tectonic structures form and evolve over geological time. By carefully scaling materials, dimensions and time, analogue experiments reveal the mechanics behind folds, faults, salt structures and fold-and-thrust belts — and provide a powerful way to validate interpretations of real subsurface data.
