
Dan Mircea Tămaș is a Lecturer at Babeș-Bolyai University, where he teaches, mentors students and coordinates research projects. He also provides consultancy and training services as a sole trader. He founded the Structural Modelling Group in 2017 and established the associated Structural and Analogue Modelling Laboratory, integrating physical experiments with digital workflows. He holds a PhD in Geology (Summa cum laude, 2019) on salt tectonics in the Eastern Carpathian Bend Zone and a habilitation (2026).
His path combines industry and academia: more than four years as a geologist in the hydrocarbon industry at OMV Petrom, interpreting seismic, well and production data, followed by more than nine years in academia. His research spans structural geology, salt tectonics, analogue and numerical modelling, geo-energy systems and geological mapping technologies, including UAV-based photogrammetry and LiDAR, with a growing focus on the role of salt formations in hydrogen and compressed-air storage for the energy transition.
He is the author of 19 articles indexed in international databases (16 in Web of Science, 8 as primary author) and a Springer book chapter, with over 40 conference participations. He has been principal investigator or project manager of 21 projects, grants and contracts, including the UEFISCDI-funded RISE and SAFE-T projects, and a team member in 11 more, with funders ranging from UEFISCDI and OMV Petrom to Doctors Without Borders. His work has been recognised with the "Ludovic Mrazec" Award of the Romanian Academy (2023), the Ad Astra Prize for Excellence in Research (2023) and the Excellence in Teaching Award of Babeș-Bolyai University (2023).
He has supervised or co-supervised several bachelor's and master's students, served on the steering committee of PhD students and, following his habilitation, has just begun supervision of his first two PhD students.
